Hard paste porcelain, thin and white, painted underglaze in blue and overglaze with iron-red, pale red, green, black enamels, and gold. Circular with deep rounded sides, rising from a narrow foot. Decorated in the centre with two narrow blue concentric circles enclosing the Three Friends (pine, prunus and bamboo), and round the rim with a chequered diaper border beneath a pale brown rim. The outside is painted with two similar designs of chrysanthemum sprays in blue outline and wash with gilt details resting on a red and gold cloud scroll with gold and red flower heads and green leaves, above a border of Karakana (Chinese lotus) petals. The foot ring is encircled by two blue lines.

According to the donor this is an example of the Three Friends ring, invented mid 18th Century and drawn, even when carelessly, in exactly the same positions. Otherwise the style of this bowl is identical with earlier types and easily confused.
