Description

Buff fritware with carved decoration under a blue glaze

Large fritware, wheel thrown, with carved decoration and a crazed and pitted lavender blue monochrome glaze.
Shape: Large fritware bowl, roughly hemispherical, with slightly incurving sides and a slightly everted rim, sitting on a high foot ring base.
Exterior: Below the rim carved scrolling decoration, resembling omega symbols on their side, form a repeating pattern with some irregularity in the carving. The central frieze comprises an Arabic script (kufic) with incised foliage in the areas between the down strokes. Above and below this frieze are raised, carved concentric lines. The lower body is gadrooned with some irregularities in the carving. The same glaze runs in an irregular pattern down the exterior foot ring .
Interior: Undecorated except for a glaze coating in lavender blue, thinner than that on the exterior.
