Description

Pinkish fritware with carved decoration under a blue glaze

Pinkish fritware, wheel thrown with carved fluting a blue opaque glaze.
Shape: Beaker finely potted with a plain rim and slightly flaring straight sides descending via a carination onto a low foot ring base; wheel thrown.
Interior: undecorated except for a blue opaque glaze which covers the upper interior evenly but runs unevenly over the lower surface.
Exterior: Carved decoration in the form of vertical ‘tongue’ shaped flutes which run over the length of the vessel body. Above these flutes a pair of concentric lines has been carved leaving a collar protruding from the surface of the neck. A carved line immediately below the fluting defines their limit. A blue opaque glaze covers the vessel surface except the foot ring base.
