Description

Bust of Sir John Woolmore, Deputy Master of Trinity House (1825-34). The Corporation of Trinity House of Deptford Strond was founded in 1514 to oversee traffic on the River Thames and to care for aged mariners.

Note

Chantrey recorded in his ledger that this bust was commissioned by 'I.H. Turner Esq. Rooks Nest' in June 1832 and was presented to his wife, Mrs Turner, in May 1833. The present bust is most likely to be a later cast, rather than the original plaster model made by Chantrey as part of the production process (current whereabouts of which unknown).
