Description

Pale buff earthenware, tin-glazed and painted in blue, and a little red. There are several 'pinholes' in the glaze on the interior and exterior. Cylindrical with a loop handle which has a vertical depression, and a slight, stumpy kick at the lower end. The circular cover has a narrow sloping rim, a domed centre, and a mushroom-shaped knob. Inside there is a circular flange which fits inside the tankard. The front of the tankard is decorated with a circular castellated tower with an arched doorway and portcullis, which has on its pointed roof, a flag pole topped by a crown and cross, flying a flag with the arms of London, a red cross on a white ground. Below the tower are the initials 'C/T . H' over '1660'.
