Plaster cast of Canova's marble statue known as the Venus Italica, in the Palazzo Pitti, Florence. The original marble (executed in 1810) was commissioned by Lodovico I of Etruria in 1804 to replace the famous antique Roman statue of Venus, known as the 'Medici Venus', which had been taken to Paris by the French after Napoleon's invasion of Italy. The Medici Venus was a 1st-century BCE Roman copy of a Greek work by Cleomenes of Athens.
