Description

Plaster cast of a marble relief. The Virgin is seen behind a ledge. Three-quarter length, facing right, wearing a heavy veil over her head. The Virgin looks down towards the Child, who is shown in a reclining pose with the right hand raised in benediction. She appears to lie on a narrow mat or cushion, which is supported by the Virgin's hand. In the foreground is a cartellino held by the Virgin. The front of the ledge is decorated with lions' head masks at left and right and the arms of the Piccolomini family on a kite-shaped shield in the centre. There are garlands between the shield and masks. The whole is surrounded by a moulded frame on three sides.
