Virgin and Child
Workshop: Unknown (Probably)
Relief of the Virgin and Child in moulded and tin-glazed terracotta
Relief of moulded terracotta, tin-glazed creamy-white on the front and the sides. The glaze is very unevenly applied and has numerous pinholes.
Three-quarter length figure of the Virgin, with the infant Christ standing on a ledge to the left of her, resting on a shallow pedestal decorated with egg and dart ornament, which is made separately. There are two holes in the top of the Virgin's head. The relief is accompanied by a shallow base (A) with ovolo moulding on the front, which is probably associated.

This relief was accessioned as 'School of Andrea Della Robbia', but although there is a generalized resemblance to reliefs of the Virgin with a standing Child from the Della Robbia workshop, the pose and expression of the figures is atypical and the quality of the glaze is very poor.During the nineteenth century reproductions and pastiches of Della Robbia sculpture abounded. Many were not made with intention to deceive, and were used in the traditional way, but in the hands of unscrupulous or ignorant dealers deceptions took place. In 1868 Marryat warned English collectors of this by reprinting from Auguste Demmin's 'Guide de l'Amateur', a passage concerning the sale of Virgins falsely attributed to Luca della Robbia.
