The Entombment
Production: Unknown (Uncertain)
Wood carved in high relief. In the centre is the tomb, the side of which is pierced with three roundels enclosing quatrefoils. Christ lying on a shroud is being lowered into the tomb by a bearded Nicodemus (on the right) and an assistant. Both are dressed in contemporary costume, with purses hanging from their belts. Christ is naked but for a loin cloth and still wears the Crown of Thorns. Behind the tomb are the Virgin, holding the left arm of Christ, and supported by St John. To their left stand Mary Magdalene with a jar of ointment and the other Mary. A third holy woman stands on the right behind Nicodemus.
