Description

Madonna and Child in Glory, carved in wood in the round, and set in a tortoise shell case. The tortoise shell case is round-headed with two hinged 'wings' which open to reveal the Virgin, crowned and holding a sceptre in her right hand and the Child in her left arm. The Virgin, crushing with her right foot the head of a serpent, stands on the crescent moon which rests on the pedestal, while the Child blesses. The pedestal has a cartouche carved on the front with the following carved in relief: IR, in between these two letters are two pairs of crossed batons, above them a crown and below them a heart pierced by a sword. On the sides of the pedestal are two winged armless herms. Four angels, seemingly floating in space, are placed on either side of the Virgin (they are attached to the back of the case). Above the head of the Virgin is carved the dove. The back of the case behind the Virgin is decorated with an applied gilt-metal mandorla.
