St John the Baptist
Head of St John the Baptist (?), carved in Italian lime wood; with traces of the original polychrome. The head is bent forward, the hair hanging in long ringlets. The face is drawn and grief stricken with the lips parted; the nose is thin and aquiline.
History note: Monsieur Ravaisson-Molliere, formerly Director of Musée du Louvre; Monsieur Alphonse Kann; George Durlacher; Christie's, 6th April, 1938, Italian Majolica, Bronzes and Objects of Art...sold by Order of George Durlacher, Esq., last surviving Partner of Messrs. Durlacher Brothers of 142, New Bond Street, W.1., p. 35, lot 121, illustrated opposite. There identified as St John the Baptist, School of Verrocchio, Florentine, 15th century, on moulded walnut base.
