Pair of Kneeling Angels

Carved wood, gessoed, painted and gilded. Both angels wear a diadem on their curly hair, and a long gown with a turned down collar and crossed straps at the front, one hanging down in front and other behind. Angel A, kneels on its right knee and supports a column on its left knee, holding it with its left hand. With its right hand it supports the top of a shield resting on the ground, which is painted with the Angel Gabriel. Angel B kneels on its left knee and with its left hand supports the top of a shield resting on the ground, which is painted with the Virgin Mary.

Reitlinger for £27.6.0; H.S. Reitlinger (d.1950); the Reitlinger Trust, Maidenhead, from which transferred in 1991.
