Agnus Dei
Agnus Dei. Wax. Circular. Obverse: The lamb is recumbent, supporting the flag with the right foot. Below are the arms of Pius V (1566-72). Round the border: ECCE.A.DEI QVI TOLLIT.P.M (Ecce Agnus Dei qui tollit peccata Mundi). Reverse: The Noli me tangere. Below, the inscription PIVS. V. PONTIFEX .MAXIMVS./.ANNO.I. In the border: NOLI.ME.TANGERE.The wax disc is protected by two discs of carton with subjects in relief painted in colours and gilded. One has the same design and inscription as the obverse on the wax but instead of the arms of Pius V (Michele Ghislieri 1504-72), those of Gregory XIII, 1572-1585 (Buoncompagni). The other has Christ in the tomb supported by two angels, with the cross behind him. Below are again the arms of Buoncompagni, and in the border GREG.XIII.PONT.MAX. The whole is in a circular wooden frame painted black and decorated with gilt and floral scrolls. The wax and carton roundels are protected by slightly domed glass on each side. [Description from Dalton, 1912, see Documentation).
