Dublin-born and Royal Academy-trained, William Behnes was a highly successful and sought-after portrait sculptor, considered by many the equal of the highly prolific portraitist, Sir Francis Chantrey (1781-1841). Unfortunately he lacked Chantrey’s business sense, and fell into debt towards the end of his life.
Maltby had a very long nose, and one of his descendants supplied the Museum with this rhyme about him: Maltby's nose was long Maltby's nose was strong t'would be no disgrace to Maltby's face if half his nose was gone.
