Description

Bust. White marble. The sitter is turned to the front, facing and looking slightly right. He is bare-headed, with luxuriant hair and side-whiskers. He wears an academical gown over a double-breasted coat with bow tie and stand up collar.

Note

This bust was commissioned in 1897 for presentation to the University in acknowledgement of Sir George Gabriel Stokes’ long tenure of the Lucasian Professorship of Mathematics. It is a replica of Thornycroft’s bust at Pembroke College, commissioned in the same year to commemorate the sixtieth anniversary of Stokes’ connection with Cambridge. He had been admitted to Pembroke College in 1837 and became its Master in 1902.
