Reverse pained glass mirror
Chinese reverse-painted mirror, made for the export market in a carved European giltwood frame.
Chinese reverse-painted mirror, made for the export market in a carved European giltwood frame. A lady is seated beneath a tree with peonies growing at the base. She wears a garment that is decorated with a four-clawed dragon emerging from the waves. The man behind the tree wears an official hat and gilt roundel, suggesting he could be a Manchurian prince. His left hand holds a plum tree branch and right hand holds a folding fan resting on a rock. A Chinese maid to the left offers a fruit tray to the female aristocrat.
