Description

Rock crystal, wheel engraved, and set in a lozenge-shaped gold frame enamelled black. Adam and Eve, naked, standing on a grassy mound to each side of an apple tree which has a serpent entwined around the trunk. The serpent offers an apple to Eve who passes it to Adam, whose left hand is outstretched to receive it. In the foreground in front of them are a newt, a snail and a toad. Foliate ornament in the angles to right and left. The frame is decorated with gold scrolwork reserved in the black ground.

Caspar Lehmann developped the technique of wheel-engraving glass, and was appointed gem and glass engraver to the Holy Roman Emperor Rudolph II (ruled 1576-1612) in Prague, and between 1605 and 1608 in Dresden at the court of Christian II, Elector of Saxony
