Crucifixion
Sculptor: Unknown
A fragment of a French Gothic sandstone sculpture, showing the head and upper part of the body of the Crucified Christ. The arms are missing from the shoulders. The figure of Christ, a woven crown of thorns on his head, bears a wound in the right side of his chest - the final wound inflicted by the lance of the Roman soldier Longinus to ensure that Christ had died. Blood and water issues from the wound ('one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once blood and water came out.': John 19:34).
