Description

An ivory plaque
Christ seated on a throne, blessing and holding an open book, is surrounded by an oval laurel wreath and a raised band of ornament. In the spandrels are the symbols of the Evangelists, except top left corner where St Matthew himself is seen writing in a book on a desk. The ground is gilt, probably modern.

This plaque was removed from a (probably) 19th century binding made to cover The Reichenau Epistolary, a 10th century Gospel also in the Museum's collection (MS McClean 30).
