Description

Ivory, carved in low relief. Oval with a bust of a lady, extraordinarily well-carved, in profile to dexter. Her hair is tied in a knot at the back, with a single coil resting on her shoulder. Inscribed on the back: 'DOMINA ELIZABETHA EYRE/M.D.C.C.'.

Note

David Le Marchand, born in Dieppe, worked mainly in England.

The sitter, Elizabeth Eyre, was the daughter of Sir Anthony Chester of Chichely. She married Charles Nicholas Eyre (d.1713), and is buried in Chichester Cathedral. Le Marchand also portrayed in 1700 Charles Chester Eyre, probably their son.
