Design for a Christmas card
Printmaker: Mackley, George
Engraved woodblock for a Christmas card with a design of a large star with a circular stave upon which is arranged notation for the Christmas carol, "We Wish You a Merry Christmas" in the key of B flat major.
Given by George Mackley, 1977
Method of acquisition: Given (1977) by Mackley, George
20th Century
Production date:
AD 1945
The verso of the block is stamped with the manufacturer's name and address: 'T.N. LAWRENCE / MANUFACTURER / BLEEDING HEART YARD / BREVILLE ST. LONODN E.C.1'. A handwritten name on the edge of the block: 'MISS F. BEZANT'. The block was given with a trimmed proof (P.15130-R(1)), with printer's inked thumbprints visible. See also another impression, P.26-1977. Mackley sent a proof of this print to Deborah Jaffé (daughter of Michael and Patricia Jaffé) with his letter dated Christmas 1975. It is assumed that P.15127-R(1) is not the same proof as that sent by Mackley to Deborah Jaffé. The design was apparently also used as the logo for the Fitzwilliam Museum's Music Conservation Appeal, although the reference does not mention the date of the appeal. See, _George Mackley, Artist and Wood Engraver, 1900-1983, Letters to a Child_ (Friends' Press, Fitzwilliam Museum, December 1989), flyleaf.
