A note with the block states: 'The drawing was transferred photographically to another block to be engraved and thus the original was preserved'. The design relates to Oliver Goldsmith's 1773 comedy, She Stoops to Conquer for publication in Dalziel's Illustrated Goldsmith (Ward and Lock, London, 1865), for which Pinwell made 100 designs. The illustration on this block relates to Act I, Scene II of Goldsmith's play set in the Three Pigeons alehouse, when the character of Tony Lumpkin (standing at far left) says: "Then I'll sing you, gentlemen, a song I made upon this ale-house, the Three Pigeons". Block inscribed on the verso: 'Pinwell; Dalziel; by G.J.Pinwell / Dalziel'. Woodblock engraved with manufacturer's details: 'C. WELLS / 24 BOUVERIE STREET / LONDON'.
