‘Madras’ shape ewer
Manufacturer: W.T. Copeland
Parian porcelain painted in blue, turquoise and red enamels, and gilded. The ewer has a globular body, contracting at the top into a slender trumpet-shaped neck and mouth, with an applied S-shaped handle forming a ring at the top, ornamented by male mask on the back of the ring, and a female mask at the junction of the lower end and the shoulder. The shoulder is decorated with a continuous arabesque design in gold, blue, and red, with turquoise 'jewels'. Above and below are narrow borders of red crosses and blue ovals between gold lines. Below the rim, inside and outside, is a blue horizontal band with alternating gold motifs over it. The outlines of the leaf and scroll moulding on the handle are gilded, and there are turquoise jewels on its upper part and gold jewels on the lower part.

This ewer is in the form of the Copeland factory's acclaimed 'Madras' ewer, exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1851, and now in the Fitzwilliam's collection (C.8-2013). The ewer was derived from the Indian vase form pūrnaghata.Thisform is coupled with Copeland's 'jewel' technique to created here an 'Old Italian' (Italian Renaissance) pattern, thereby combining two entirely different historical and geographical influences. The Copeland factory was owned by William Taylor Copeland during the period that this ewer was made
