Description

The sisters Anne and Ursule de la Croix collaborated in this memorial portrait of their aunt Sophie Elisabeth Cheron (1648-1711), the talented professional artist, poet and musician, fourth woman to be admitted to the French Académie Royale de peinture et de sculpture, and the first to be admitted on her own merit (as opposed to family connections). This is the artists’ only recorded portrait.
