The print is one of Eugène Delacroix’s first literary illustrations, the tenth image in a series of seventeen for Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s 'Faust'. Marguerite (Gretchen) sits alone on the right of the image, with her back against the wall, a spinning wheel to her right and discarded book and spindle on the floor to her left. A vase of flowers on a table covered with a rug on the left.
