Description

Medallion, ivory, carved in high relief. Oval. The sitter is shown three-quarter view with his right shoulder forward. He has a fringe and bushy curling hair on either side of his face. His shoulders are draped in Roman style. The back is cross-hatched and inscribed round the upper edge in faded black ink 'DE WITT Burgomaster of Amsterdam'.

History note: Purchased from Parsons, July 1917 for £3.0.0.; H.S. Reitlinger (d.1950); the Reitlinger Trust, Maidenhead, from which transferred in 1991.
