Sailor courting a Girl
Production: Hannong factory (Possibly)
Tin-glazed earthenware figures of a sailor holding a girl by the hand, standing beside a mooring bollard on a quay
Buff earthenware, moulded, and covered with greyish tin-glaze. The figures stand on a shallow square base with cut corners, moulded to resemble cobbles. The girl stands on the viewer's right in front of a mooring bollard with a rope wound around it. She wears a hat with a broad brim, a low-necked bodice with lacing over the stomacher, and a long skirt and shoes with pompoms on top. The young sailor steps forward on his right foot, and leans towards the girl. He has his left arm around the her shoulders and holds her right hand in his. He is bare-headed and holds his hat under his right arm. He wears a cravat, a short jacket, trousers which end above his ankles, and buckled shoes. There is a ventilation hole in the top of the bollard and another in the mans back below the edge of his jacket.
