Description

Rectangular casket of ivory, with later (not modern) French (?) mounts of gilt-metal. The lid is a truncated pyramid. The mounts are flat strips of metal concealing and securing the joins between the ivory plaques. The main mounts end in fleur-de-lis, whilst the hasp ends in an animal head. The lid and sides are decorated in gouache (very faded). Only four of the decorations are now identifiable: (1) on the left side: a bird with a long tail and plumage. (2) on the back: there are three fabulous animals, the outlines of which are scratched on the surface and traces of the original stain remains:- in the centre, a quadruped holding a branch of foliage in its jaws. Either side: a spotted beast, the one on the left having a long wavy tail. [see Longhurst, 1927)
