Production date: AD 1778
'Holman showed 'A view of the Downs, from Deal beach' at the Society of Artists in 1768 (no.124). This is the same subject but dated 1778. His only other two exhibited Deal paintings were 'Ships of war coming to anchor in the Downs', also shown there in 1771, and 'A calm in the Downs', at the RA in 1775.' This has been identified as 'almost certainly a view from the beach at Deal, Kent out over the Downs - the major sailing ship anchorage between the east coast of Kent and the Goodwin Sands'. (information provided by Pieter van der Merwe via ArtUk Art Detective, 2014)
