Soft-paste porcelain mug, transfer-printed onglaze in black. The cylindrical mug is slightly flared at the foot and rim, and has a ribbed strap handle. It stands on a flattened footring. The mug is printed with a bust of Queen Charlotte flanked on either side by rococo scrollwork supporting a ribbon, which reads CHARLOTTE QUEEN OF GREAT BRITAIN.

Relative size of this object is displayed using code inspired by Good Form and Spectacle's work on the British Museum's Waddeson Bequest website and their dimension drawer. They chose a tennis ball to represent a universally sized object, from which you could envisage the size of an object.

The print is after a portrait in oils attributed to Thomas Frye (1710-62), and taken from a mezzotint by him of 1762. The copper plate for the transfer-print was probably engraved by Thomas Billinge of Liverpool. It also occurs with the signature 'I.Sadler, Liverpool'.
