Description

Soft-paste porcelain tureen and cover and stand, decorated with flower sprays onglaze with polychrome enamels and gilt.

Soft-paste porcelain tureen, cover and stand, decorated onglaze with claret ground colour and iron-red, yellow, green, blue, lilac, puce and brown enamels and gilt. The tureen is of quatrelobed oval shape, with two scallop shell handles; the domed cover is of similar shape with an artichoke knop; and the deep stand, en suite, has incurved sides and stands on a footring. Decorated with the 'Hope Edwards' pattern. The sides of the tureen are decorated with sprays and sprigs of coloured fruit and flowers, below a wavy claret border with eight pendants which are overlaid with cornucopiae of flowers and trellis in ciselé gilding; the two shell handles are picked out in gilding. The cover is decorated en suite with the knop and two leaves picked out in gilding. In the centre of the stand is a cluster of fruit and flowers with a gilt band round the well; the sides are decorated en suite with the rest.

Note

See correspondence of 1st May, 1981 from Robert Williams of Winfred Williams, 3 Bury Street, St. James's, London, S.W.1., in which he states that this item is later-decorated, 19th century forgery. Examination has shown it to have definite signs of erasure of old decoration and addition of new, particularly the claret ground and gilding. The gilding is coarse and muddy, and the claret colour rather pale. The flower painting is in the style of the London decorator, James Giles.
