Description

Soft-paste porcelain tea bowl and saucer, painted in polychrome enamels with a pastoral scene.

Soft paste porcelain tea bowl and saucer, painted in polychrome enamel colours. Cup circular with shaped six-sided rim, the sides moulded with six vertical panels and a stylised floral border, standing on a footring. Decorated with two oval panels framed by black scrolls, each enclosing a shepherd and shepherdess in a landscape; between the panels, two floral sprigs. Saucer circular with shaped six-sided rim, moulded with a circular scroll framed panel and a stylised floral border. Decorated with a shepherd and shepherdess in a landscape, surrounded by four floral sprigs and a flower head; dark red line on rim.

Notes

History note: Dr and Mrs Hugh Statham; Dr Statham died 1967; Mrs Statham died 1970; their daughter, Miss Beryl Statham by whom lent anonymously in 1970. Bequeathed by Miss Statham, 1990, accepted by H.M. Government in lieu of Inheritance Tax and allocated to the Fitzwilliam Museum
