Description

Soft-paste porcelain plate, painted onglaze in polychrome enamels, and gilt

Soft-paste porcelain plate, painted onglaze in red, green, blue, pink and brown enamels, and gilt. The circular plate has a scalloped out-turned rim of twelve lobes, and is supported on a low footring. It is painted in the centre with the crowned coat of arms of the Duke of Clarence, with the insignia of the Order of the Garter between sprays of oak and olive. The rim has the entwined ribbons of the Orders of Thistle and Garter, enclosing insignia, and sprays of thistle and rose.

Note

This plate formed part of dessert service commissioned from Flight's Worcester factory by William Henry, Duke of Clarence, the fourth son of George III. Prince William was already a Knight of the Garter, when in 1789 he was awarded the Order of the Thistle and was created Duke of Clarence and St Andrew.
