  • Text: at the upper end of this room are / some paintings by Giovanni San Giovanni / on the Wall, brought from the wall of / an Old Church in Florence & laid on / this wall without injury to the picture / the contrivance of the late Director of / this Academy, a valuable discovery in / a City where fine paintings are so common on the walls both within & without their / buildings, under the arcade of a / Court of this building are several / models[i] casts from parts of figures by M:l Angelo / & the model in Stucca[sic] by John of / Bologna for the Rape of the Sabines / in the Piazza of the Palazzo Vecchio / the figures are 8 feet high, in the establishment of this / noble Academy Peter Leopold present Duke of Tuscany has proved how much he has the / cultivation of the fine Arts at heart, & it is / much to be wished the opulence of the country / was sufficient to second the munificence of / the Prince, by giving liberal encouragemnt / to the professors who succeed in the School of / M.l[ii]

  • Text: of Ghiberti M:l Angelo & the first Genius's / of Modern times, it would be ingratitude / not to acknowledge the generous behaviour of / this Prince towards the Professors & lovers of / the fine Arts, he has placed attendants in / his Gallery who shew stra[i] all person / the wonders of the place with utmost politeness / & patience, & never recieve anything from / the company, & to enable them to do this / the Duke has lately encreased[sic] their saleries / & made them very handsome, every person / who is inclined to draw in the gallery / by only applying in writing to the Keeper / not only obtains immediate permission / but he may have paper chalk & every / convenience, in the same manner as in / the Academy, & from the same Royal / Munificence, as an Artist I am grateful / for & remember this instance of his liberality / yet this one of this smallest specimens of his virtues, this good Prince a pattern / to all others has banished death from / the penal laws of his country, because
