Description

Soft-paste porcelain figure of a Boy representing Painting or 'The Infant Artist', decorated in polychrome enamels.

Soft-paste porcelain slip-cast, glazed, and painted onglaze in green, yellow, purplish-pink, red and brown. The infant artist stands on a scrolled base beside a tree stump. He holds his palette over his left arm and his paint brush in his right hand.

Notes

History note: Dr and Mrs Hugh Statham Collection; on Dr Statham's death in 1967 it remained in Mrs Hugh (Margaret) Statham's possession until her death in 1970; Miss Beryl Statham, by whom lent anonymously (Statham Loan 18-1970), and bequeathed in 1990. Accepted by H.M. Government in lieu of Inheritance Tax and allocated to the Fitzwilliam Museum.

Note

Attributed to Longton Hall on accession, but this model was tentatively associated with Vauxhall by Dr Bernard Watney in 1989, a view reiterated in 2014 by Roger Massey, a member of the English Ceramic Circle.
