Description

Two raised-work panels. Ivory satin-faced silk, embroidered with polychrome silk, silver and gilt-metal threads, and spangles. The silk is worked in split, satin, stem, French knots, ? for hair of the figures of Faith and Charity, possibly, and twisted or corded thread, laid and couched. The metal thread is laid and couched, padded, braided, interlaced, and used to secure spangles, also 'stretched' to make small trees (?) or floral bouquets. Faith, Hope, and Charity with their attributes. Faith and Hope are in the upper panel in roundels of metal thread. The remainder of the panel is worked with metal thread panels enclosing 'bouquets', and with symmetrically arrnaged flat silk embroidered flowers - tulips, daffodils, peony (?). the lower panel has a central roundel enclosing Charity, similar 'bouquet' panels, and flowers - daffodils, tulips, iris, strawberry, and peony (?). Mounted in a later glazed wood frame.
