Inscription present: the following in brown ink: [i] preceding word crossed through; [ii] preceding word crossed through; [iii] preceding word crossed through; [iv] inscription between these marks crossed through; [v] preceding word crossed through; [vi] preceding three words crossed through

  • Text: + Note / In from[i] the School of Cimabue, Giotto, & their successors / down to the 15th Century, as both Painters & Sculptors / copied the Garments commonly worn, we see a beautiful / distinctness in the forms of the vestments, & a natural / Grand, graceful & finely diversified order in the folds / such as we see in Nature herself the great Artchitype of all / works of Design: but after the beginning of the 16 / Century when stories from Greek & Roman Authors began / to be represented, in dresses which the artists had never / seen in nature, of whose forms they were ignorant of[ii] / they of course did not procure garments made of the / same form to[iii] in which the[sic] could dress the living / model or a lay-figure, as the example for their / work; in consequence of which they often drew their / draperies from imagination, & as the general forms / were undetermined so the folds were in course / unnatural, & the effect was [iv]disgusting to the eye & / misguiding to the mind judgment[sic] [iv] that the eye was / disgusted, & the judgment[sic] misguided[v] misled. / Some Artists have been so absurd as to dress their figures / in a parcel of raggs[sic] of Uncertain forms, which produces / a distraction of effect, distructive[sic] of the form of the / Human figure; some artists be[vi] see the figures of / Apostles in S:t John de Lateran, by Rusconi &c
