Hydrangeas
Painter: Steer, Philip Wilson
History note: Sir Cyril Kendall Butler, K.B.E.; with Lockett Thomson, Barbizon House, London; G. John Scaramanga; bequeathed by G. John Scaramanga to his widow, 1972
Height: 85.4 cm
Width: 112 cm
Relative size of this object is displayed using code inspired by Good Form and Spectacle's work on the British Museum's Waddeson Bequest website and their dimension drawer. They chose a tennis ball to represent a universally sized object, from which you could envisage the size of an object.
Method of acquisition: Bequeathed (1975) by Scaramanga, G. John, Mrs
Production date: AD 1901
The model for this painting was probably Miss Ethel Warwick, as may be deduced from a portrait of her in the National Gallery of South Africa, Cape Town, also of 1901, in which she is apparently wearing the same lace-edged jacket. Related drawings are in the Victoria and Albert Museum, Steer sketch-books, nos. E279-1942 and E289-1942.
