Inscription present: the following in brown ink: [i] preceding word crossed through; [ii] three preceding words crossed through; [iii] seven preceding words crossed through; [iv] preceding word crossed through

  • Text: As we Find the First Problems of that Science in / some of the Most Antient[sic] [?]emini which without Doubt / were some[i] the Earliest Productions of stone sculpture / which bore any Resemblance to the Human form / such was the Boundaries of their Estates, [?] &c / their Deities they worshiped[sic] as Pan Osiris[ii], Hermes, Pan, &c / Yet these Rude Essays they Form'd upon / geometrical Rules & Proportions (This I can Venture / to Affirm, for the Antient[sic] sculptures Agree in / their Measures According to the Ages & Countrys, they / were Made In; & According to their Characters, / as will be shewn Hereafter) as for Example, the / Head still was made on a circular Principle, from the Top to the Bottom of the Nose[iii] Growing of the Hair / to the top of the Nose, from thence to the Bottom of the / Nose, & from thence to the Bottom of the Chin, were / Equal Distances, the term considered wholly was / Divided in the following Manner: the length was / seven[iv] somewhat more than 7 times the the[sic] Length / of the Head; & the width of the side was Proportion'd / to the Length of A Man's Foot: the Term being as wide at the Top as the Bottom, / This Hamilton supposes to have given Rise / to the Naked Figures,
