Soft-paste porcelain cup and saucer, moulded with basket-weave, transfer-printed underglaze in green and gilt. Rounded funnel-shaped cup with scalloped rim and loop handle. Circular saucer with curved sides and scalloped rim. The cup is decorated with a Chinese lady standing beside a pot of flowers and another lady and a child standing beside a pot of flowers. Behind them there are fences and between them, in the background, a lake, buildings, a tree and mountains. Inside the cup there is a child holding a pot and round the rim a border incorporating butterflies, scale pattern and lozenges. The edge of the rim is gilt and there are touches of gilding on the handle. The saucer is decorated with a Chinese lady and child, standing in front of a fence beside a pot of flowers. The border is en suite with the cup. The edge of the rim is gilt.

This printed pattern, known as ‘Oriental Mother and Child’, was produced in blue as pattern number. 458 about 1826 and later with different numbers according to colour. When printed in green it was pattern 1151.
