Vulcan with a Putto, representing Winter

Soft-paste porcelain figure of Vulcan with a Putto, representing Winter, painted over slightly bluish lead-glaze in polychrome enamels, and gilt.
Soft-paste porcelain, containing bone ash, figure of Vulcan with a Putto, press-moulded, and painted over slightly bluish lead-glaze in blue, green, yel-low, pink, dark pink, red, brown, and black enamels, and gilt. The underside has an unglazed flat area round the edge, and a concave glazed area with a circular ventilation hole off centre. The rounded oblong base has rocaille scrolls in relief round the sides and front, and, at centre back, a tree-trunk with a large knot on the front, and on its top, a flaming tripod brazier. Vulcan stands with his left leg advanced, and his hands held over the brazier. His face is turned to the viewer. He wears a polychrome floral patterned mantle with a black and white 'fur' lining and gold edging, which passes over his head, and down his back, and is bunched up around his hips at the front. On the ground to his left there is a seated child wearing a polychrome floral pat-terned cape with a turned up collar, and blue skates tied on with red ribbon. On the ground in front of the figures there are three brown logs. The scrolls round the edge are decorated in pale and dark pink and gold.

This set of Seasons was derived from Meissen models, see Hurlbutt, 1926, lower photograph, but Winter does not follow the Meissen prototype as Autumn does.
