'The Muses Modeller'
Soft-paste porcelain figure of a Seated Woman representing Sight.
Soft-paste porcelain containing bone ash, press-moulded and covered with finely speckled lead-glaze, except for some areas of the closed underside, which has a small ventilation hole in the centre. The low mound base is roughly circular with facets at the front. On the right it has a tree stump with two branches (one missing from behind the figure), from which sprout four pairs of leaves flanking a pierced berry, and one leaf and berry. Sight sits on the stump in profile to the viewer. Her right leg is extended and she rests a square mirror on her thigh, and supports it at the top with her right hand. Her left arm is bent at the elbow and she holds back her hair with her left hand. The rest of her hair is drawn back into a bun at the nape of her neck. She wears a long full skirt, and a chemise under a low-necked bodice, with sleeves ending in cuffs or turn-backs above the elbow, and the front open to reveal part of her left breast.
