Description

Soft-paste porcelain figure of a Standing Monk or Friar, decorated in polychrome enamels, and gilt.

Soft-paste porcelain containing bone ash, press-moulded, and covered on the visible surfaces with glassy and speckly lead-glaze, painted in red, pale brown, dark purplish-brown, and black enamels, and gilt. The underside of the circular low mound base is unglazed and has a central ventilation hole. The monk stands with his feet together, the right foot slightly advanced. He turns his head to his right, and holds up his right arm; his left is beside him with the hand pointing outwards. He has brown hair with a tonsure, a pale brown habit with a black belt, and a dark brown cape and cowl, and black shoes with gold buckles.

History note: Mr Geneen or Geneer, Christchurch Road, Bournemouth, from whom purchased on 18 April 1921 for £11.10 with its pair by Dr J.W.L. Glaisher.
