Description

Soft-paste porcelain figure of a Shepherd Bagpiper with Dog, painted in polychrome enamels.

Soft-paste porcelain containing bone ash, press-moulded, and painted over lead-glaze in a little blue, green, yellow, dark orange, pink, dark pink, red, pale greyish-purple, pale brown, and dark brown enamels. The flat, unglazed base has a circular ventilation hole. The shepherd stands on a low oval mound with a waist-high tree stump on his right. He stands on his right leg with his left extended to the side so that its toe is over the edge of the base. His head is turned to his right. He has the bag of the bagpipes under his left arm and holds the chaunter in both hands. He wears a pale brown, broad-brimmed hat with a dark orange band and a rosette on the turned up side of the brim; a white shirt, and a flowered jacket with a pink lining; pale yellow breeches with dark orange edging and bows at the knees; white stockings, and pale purple shoes with orange bows. In front of the stump and his right leg sits a pale purple and white terrier dog sits with its head turned to its right.
