Description

Soft-paste porcelain containing bone ash, figure of a Bull, press-moulded, and lead-glazed overall except for the outer edge of the concave underside.

Soft-paste porcelain containing bone ash, figure of a Bull, press-moulded, and lead-glazed overall except for the outer edge of the concave underside. The bull stands in front of a tree stump on an approximately oval base, and decorated on the top with two applied flowers surrounded by five leaves on the front, and with an applied flower surrounded by four leaves on the left beside the bull's front feet. At the back, near the bottom of the tree stump, there is a square hole to take an attachment. The stump divides into a short and a longer branch, the latter originally having a further branch. The bull stands with its feet together in profile to left, with its head turned very slightly towards the viewer, and its tail hanging down between its hind legs.

History note: Dr and Mrs Hugh Statham; Dr Statham died 1967; Mrs Statham died 1970; their daughter, Miss Beryl Statham by whom lent anonymously in 1970 (Statham Loan 16-1970). Bequeathed by Miss Statham, 1990, accepted by H.M. Government in lieu of Inheritance Tax and allocated to the Fitzwilliam Museum
