Factory: Derby Porcelain Factory
Soft-paste porcelain, slip-cast, and painted over lead-glaze in green, pale turquoise, pale yellow, flesh, pink, orange, red, dark purple, and brown enamels, with a little gilding
Soft-paste porcelain, slip-cast, and painted over lead-glaze in green, pale turquoise, pale yellow, flesh, pink, orange, red, dark purple, and brown enamels, with a little gilding. The partly glazed underside has a large circular ventilation hole and three patch marks. The oval mound base has at the back a tree stump with one branch bearing two clumps of applied red holly berries, and green leaves. In the back of the trunk there is a rectangular aperture to take an attachment. On the top of the mount to the viewer's left there are two clumps of red holly berries and leaves, and on the right, a bundle of pale brown sticks. The nude boy sits on the stump with his head turned slightly to his left, his left leg forward, and both hands held over a flaming brazier resting on his right knee. He has a ruddy complexion, brown hair and eyes. He wears a pink drape lined with purple ermine spots, which is draped over his head, and falls down behind, with one end passing over his knees in front and down over his left leg. The brazier is pale turquoise with a gilt band round the top, and yellow, orange, and purple flames.
History note: Purchased from Hammond and Cardew's (?) shop in Petty France (York Street, Westminster) on 18 December 1918 for £16.
