Description

Soft-paste porcelain slip-cast and painted over lead glaze in turquoise, green, pink, flesh, red, purple, and brown enamels, and gilt

Soft-paste porcelain slip-cast and painted over lead glaze in turquoise, green, pink, flesh, red, purple, and brown enamels, and gilt. The slightly concave underside is unglazed with an oval ventilation hole near the back, and four patch marks. The four-sided base has two of the corners at centre back and centre front. It is domed in the middle and has a scroll at centre front flanked by rocaille 'frills'. At the back there is a tree stump with a branch on the viewer's left. Apollo stands with his left foot forward, right hand extended towards the viewer, and left arm extended behind him with the hand resting over a lyre. His head is turned three-quarters to his left. He has ruddy cheeks and wears a green laurel wreath over his brown hair, a yellow-lined pink drape semé with gold foliage and red flowers, and also a turquoise cloak held on the left shoulder with a blue brooch. On the viewer's left beside the lyre is a head of tools and a pale brown pallet. On the right there is a trumpet and a lira da brachia or a lute on a heap of books with red, brown, and yellow covers. The base is picked out in turquoise and gold.
