Description

Figure of Apollo playing a lyre, soft-paste porcelain painted in enamels and gitl.

Soft-paste porcelain, slip-cast, and painted over lead-glaze in green, pale yellow, pale flesh pink, two shades of pink, pale purple, red, reddish-brown, and black enamels, and gilt. The unglazed underside has four patch marks, and a large circular ventilation hole. The base is square with cut corners, moulded edges and fluted sides, and apart from a gilt band round the upper edge, is undecorated. On the left at the back there is the lower part of a fluted column, coloured pink. Apollo stands beside it on his right leg, with his left leg relaxed at the knee and the foot extended behind him. His head is turned to his left, and he holds a lyre in his left hand and is about to pluck it with his right. He has a green laurel wreath over his wavy dark grey hair, and wears a long pale yellow tunic semé with red dots and decorated with a purple floral design. The cowl neck is red, and the edges are gold. He has a long pink cloak, and reddish-brown sandals. The lyre is reddish-brown and gold.
