Description

Late Medieval, lead-glazed earthenware jug, painted underglaze in manganese and green, with a bird with a human face on each side panel.

Greyish-buff earthenware, the interior and exterior covered with clear lead-glaze overall; the base and a short distance above it unglazed. Painted underglaze in manganese and green.
Shape 2. Swelling ovoid body with flat base, short cylindrical neck, applied folded spout and broad strap handle.
The spout and handle are flanked by pairs of vertical manganese lines forming side panels, each containing a bird with a human face in profile to right towards a plant with two leaves. Below the spout are four broad green horizontal strokes flanked by narrower manganese lines. Below and round the rim, there are two manganese horizontal bands; on the handle, three broad green stripes alternate with groups of three and four manganese.
