Pottery: Unidentified Orvieto pottery
Pale yellowish-buff earthenware, the interior of the neck and the exterior of the foot are lead-glazed pale brownish-yellow, the base is unglazed, and the rest is tin-glazed off-white. Painted in manganese and copper-green.
Shape 17. Elongated ovoid body with short cylindrical neck, which expands towards the rim ans is pinched at the front to form a lip; solid pedestal foot; loop handle made from a roll of clay.
The front is decorated with a long-tailed bird facing to the right, its neck and head curving downwards towards its front foot. It is outlined in manganese, partially filled in with green and green hatching. On each side of the handle there are Vs between two sets of three manganese vertical lines. Above and below, the body is encircled by two manganese bands. Round the neck there is a green chain with a horizontal manganese band above; on the handle, four oblique manganese stripes with two green stripes between two of them, one between the next two, and one at the bottom.
History note: Presumed excavated at Orvieto; Elia Volpi, Florence; Durlacher Brothers, London, from whom purchased in November 1920 by F. Leverton Harris (1864-1926).

Birds of several types occur on pedestal jugs from Orvieto and elsewhere in central Italy. This jug was presumably found at Orvieto as it is illustrated numbered 12, in the ninth photograph in a group believed to have been taken there in c. 1909-10, given by David Whitehouse in 1986 to the BM Department of Medieval and Later Antiquities.
